Hands On: Sigma SD14
We were starting to feel like we were waiting for Godot, but we (finally!) got a hold of a full production model Sigma SD14, the DSLR using the newly upgraded Foveon X3 chip that records red, green, and blue on three separate stacked layers in its image sensor. We're running it through the standard battery of tests -- resolution, color accuracy, noise, as you read this. In the meantime here are some first impressions of the camera, and of course a gallery of image quality shots we've taken with it, so you can see what it can do. This is a solidly built camera, on a par with cameras in the Canon EOS 30D class. Our roving camera tester Jack Howard commented, "the design is chunky, and satisfyingly large. This is an unabashed DSLR that won't get confused for an oversized EVF camera.
2008 Volvo S40 and V50 break cover!
Just days after the conclusion of media previews at the New York Auto Show, Volvo has lifted the lid on the revamped S40 and V50. While the overall look isn't dramatically different from the other recent Volvos, the cars' have been sufficiently refined to give both the sedan and wagon more distinctive appearances. The wagon gets a a slightly more muscular front bumper shape that fits in better with the larger XC models, while the sedan has a slimmer, sleeker look that bears more than a passing resemblance to the recently-introduced S80.The bigger changes show up inside of the cars, where a reworked design frees up new storage spaces, addressing one of the many complaints about the previous iterations. The door panels have been redone and a new space at the bottom of the center stack is now large enough for a letter-sized book.
Developer wants steam engine to make permanent stop in LeClaire
Whether it gets derailed or on track is anyone's guess, but the owner of a 1924 ALCO Grand Trunk Western 8305, 0-8-0, hopes his steam engine can whistle into LeClaire. Michael Mahler, a developer with LeClaire's Great River LC, hopes to bring the steam engine he bought in 2005 from Northwestern Steel in Sterling, Ill., to the scenic riverfront town and put it on a spur he'd lease from the railroad. Some flat cars and a caboose could be added to create the look of a train stopped in LeClaire, and the train could be used for retail and museum space, Mr. Mahler said. "Anything's possible," he said. "It could have a candy store, or even a diner. But, whatever it has would be a wonderful addition to LeClaire and a way to get one of those green signs that bring people in off the interstate.
DPWH execs in Asean lamppost scam axed
After almost two weeks, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) finally replaced its officials linked to the Asean (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) summit streetlamps mess in Cebu. Sun-Star Cebu (www.sunstar.com.ph) reported Wednesday that the Ombudsmans six-month preventive suspension on DPWH Central Visayas officials was finally served Tuesday. The order, issued two weeks ago, was delivered to DPWH 7 last week but it was only Tuesday that the DPWH hierarchy decided on who will replace Regional Director Robert Lala. Lala confirmed that he will start serving his suspension Wednesday and that engineer Gamaliel Abiera, chief of the DPWH 7 construction division, will take his place. Abiera is the district engineer of the 4th Iloilo Engineering District based in Sta. Barbara town.
