It’s Official. He makes Thingies

He has worked at the same company for 7 years, doing the same job. Nonetheless, when people ask me what he does, I give what could only be compared to as the verbal form of a shrug. I know he works in a high-tech field, using computers and current mirrors. He discusses writer signals and waveforms, op-amps and voltage faults. That I can remember.

He's in a laudable profession. If you are reading this via the computer, you could probably thank him for your computer's hard drive. Or something he did working on computers. Or for working. If you asked me what he did, I could tell you he is an analog design engineer. At least that's what his degree reads.

Because we live in the silicon mountains (not Pamela Lee's-the high-tech ones), there is a pretty good chance that I'm going to meet someone who works for one of the local high-tech companies.

Marijuana growing operation uncovered

TROY-The Walworth County Drug Unit uncovered a large marijuana growing operation at N8833 Pickeral Lake Road earlier this month.

Police recovered seven marijuana root balls and evidence of a "sophisticated" growing operation that probably produced dozens of marijuana plants prior to the April 4 search, Drug Unit Sgt. Jeff Patek said.

"More plants were grown there at one time," Patek said. "Between the number of pots, lights and size of the rooms, it would indicate a larger grow than the seven plants."

Other items recovered included more than 50 buckets, hoses, heating lamps, fertilizers, potting trays and power cords, all evidence of a growing operation, Patek said.

Patek suspects the marijuana was grown at the vacant residence since November.

Mumbai asked to conserve energy

MUMBAI: Businesses in Indias financial capital, Mumbai, are being asked to keep down air conditioning use, change light bulbs and put computers on sleep mode in a drive to conserve energy and prevent severe power shortages.

Power supplier Tata Power Co Ltd said the city, which aspires to be a global financial hub and normally enjoys uninterrupted electricity, faced potential power cuts as demand peaks in April and May - the hottest months in the Mumbai calendar.

Demand for power has risen with shopping malls, cinemas and new luxury apartments springing up across the city, reflecting an economic boom that encourages spending on everything from refrigerators to plasma televisions.

Tata Power Co urged office workers not to use electricity at peak times, switch the air conditioning on an hour after starting work and flip off televisions and mobile phone chargers at the plug.

Editorials: Not like the lampposts controversy

THAT those who were noisy about the decorative lamps issue are now training their guns on the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) is not surprising.

The CICC is the most controversial project undertaken by the administration of Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia and critics hounded it throughout its construction last year.

Pinoy Votes: Sun.Star Election 2007

When the issue was not about the appropriateness of the spending, it was about whether it would be built on time or even about the leak in a portion of its roof.

Surprising

It is thus surprising that after the facility was used as venue of the Association of Southeast Asian Nation in January, the CICC was spared from scrutiny until recently.

With the number of critics and this being an election season, Capitol officials probably expected questions on the CICC construction to be raised earlier.
